The University of Calabar has unveiled a policy granting automatic employment to graduates who earn first-class honours, in a strategic move to retain exceptional talent and strengthen its academic workforce.
Vice-Chancellor, Offiong Effanga Offiong, announced the initiative during the institution’s 38th convocation ceremony, which saw over 10,000 graduates formally admitted into the alumni body.
He noted that the policy is aimed at addressing critical staffing needs while recognising and rewarding outstanding academic performance.
University records indicate that 9,173 students graduated with first degrees, including 52 first-class graduates who are expected to benefit from the employment scheme. Additionally, 743 students earned master’s degrees, while 152 received diplomas.
The Vice-Chancellor stressed that academic excellence must translate into meaningful national development, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to producing graduates known for integrity, competence and a strong sense of responsibility to society.
He further outlined reforms introduced under his administration, including a centralised admissions system designed to enhance transparency and curb over-admission. He added that the university has commenced the serialisation of certificates with verifiable student data to tackle forgery and boost credibility.
In line with its expansion drive, the university has established new faculties, including Media and Communication Studies and Laboratory Sciences, with pioneer graduates already emerging from both programmes.
The institution is also finalising a five-year strategic development plan focused on infrastructure upgrade, research advancement, digital transformation and global competitiveness.
Chancellor of the university and Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, urged graduates to deploy their knowledge responsibly, emphasising that true education is reflected in character, humility and service to humanity.
Earlier, Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Udom Ekpoudom, commended the university management for prioritising staff welfare, clearing outstanding allowances and strengthening programme accreditation, including ongoing improvements to the Dentistry programme in collaboration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria.
The ceremony also featured the presentation of academic prizes and cash awards to over 200 outstanding students, attracting dignitaries from government, academia and traditional institutions.
