Burial Of Atta: Understanding The Role Of Iroko Tree

Standing in the palace of Atta, towards its eastern gate is this Iroko Tree that is possibly the oldest tree known on record in Igala land.
The tree is one of the items used in “sealing” the palace, which presupposes that it is as old as the palace.
As part of the burial ritual of Atta, the Iroko tree is covered with calico (okpe) which is the funeral garment of the Igala people.
This simply demonstrates that the Iroko (Atta) has truly died. The tree will remain covered till the funeral is completed.
