Attah’s Burial: Why An Attah Does Not Travel On Water

An Atta does not travel on water vehicles and here is the reason. Once an individual ascends the throne of Atta, it becomes a taboo for him to travel on boat, ship or canoe, this is because his body is buried in a canoe-like coffin. Therefore, if an Atta enters a water object, he is deemed to have died.
The canoe conveying the remains of an Atta is moved through a back opening from the palace, in the middle of a dead night, all the way to Aja-ina forest where it will be concealed. This journey is characterized by several secret rituals starting from the palace to the terminal point.
This is why people are urged to remain indoors in the next few nights as one cannot tell which of the nights this journey will be.
