As the global economy and society settles to the new normal following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, the Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, United Arab Emirates, Omar Bin Sultan Al Olama has revealed that his country is willing to compare notes with Nigeria on Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Olama disclosed this Thursday, in a speech during a webinar on Artificial Intelligence, titled “Moving Ahead, The Future is Artificial Intelligence,” hosted by the UAE.
Olama said his country’s advancement in Artificial intelligence couldn’t have been possible without dialogue, sharing this practice and cooperation.
“My country is pleased to share our experience with our brethren in Nigeria.
“The UAE has been a vista for technology and Nigeria is in forefront of technology in Africa. With this, we can compliment each other,” the minister said.
He explained that the health and social economic crisis of COVID-19 has made all of us appreciate the importance of technological advancement and continuous development of human lives and processes.
Olama who used the opportunity to condoled with those who lost loved ones to the pandemic said, global community is faced with the new normal of working virtually, hence the need to cooperate and collaborate to ensure no one is left behind.
He sounded note of caution that “The effects of the Covid-19 is not going to go away today or soon, but something we will continue to see increasing as we go along.” He revealed that UAE has superb case of virtual work and Artificial intelligence and ensuring 100 percent promote work quick and effectively. He said the use of robotic helped the UAE to overcome the effects of the pandemic and minimise lost of lives.
Also speaking, the Nigeria’s minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr Isa Pantai praised the UAE for being one of the leading countries that takes proactive steps in digital technology. He said Nigeria is also on track when it comes to emerging digital technologies, particularly, Artificial intelligence.
“He explained that Nigeria officially started the journey on AI on 21 October, 2019,when President Muhammadu Buhari expanded the scope of the ministry I supervised from Federal Ministry of Communication to Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy.”
He explained that implementation on 24 October, 2019.”We were mandated to immediately deploy national digital economy policy for a digital Nigeria from 2020 to 2030, which we have already developed and unveiled by President Buhari on 28 November, 2019.
While welcoming quests, the UAE Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Fahad AL-Taffaq said prior to COVID-19 pandemic..new technologies were already making many jobs, business models, and other older technologies obsolete… But the fact is, a new paradigm is indeed emerging… Covid-19 has accelerated digitalisation in our communities and within the business environment.
