The Chairman House of Representatives Committee on National Population Commission and Member Representing Ajaokuta Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, Honorable Lawal Muhammadu Idirisu has restated the urgent need for another census.
Hon Idirisu made this call in Abuja on Thursday, when he received in audience the Director-General of National Population Commission (NPC), Dr. Ghaji Ismaila Bello at the National Assembly.
Dr. Ghaji Ismaila Bello during the public hearing intimate the committee about critical issues facing the population commission. The whole discussion was centered on the fast-growing population of the country and census.
The House committee chairman, while reacting to the Agency’ charged the commission to collaborate with the census board to break the jinx by conducting a census for the country. “The last census of this nation was conducted in 2006, since then there have been births and deaths”. There is every need for a fresh census today.
The Director-General of the population commission disclosed to the committee that the timing for a census requires political will and proclamation by the president to constitutionally carry out the population census of the country.
Addressing newsmen after the public hearing, the chairman House Committee on Population Said” Nigeria requires accurate information like the age and sex of the population”, I and my colleagues in the committee are working to ensure that we justify the mandate given to us.
The House committee chairman promised his continuous support for the commission.
