The All Progressive Congress (APC) has announced the result of last Saturday’s local government congresses in Abia State which was peaceful and witnessed a massive turn out of members of the party.
Candidates of the major opposition party in the state, who have the backing and support of High Chief Ikechi Emenike won all the 27 seats in the 17 local government areas of the state.
THE SUMMIT reports that in July, candidates with the backing of the secretary of the party’s Contact and Strategy Committee had won the ward congresses in a landslide just as the result has been ratified by the party.
The chairmen-elect are Elder Ifeanyi Ekwuribe; Umuahia North, Chief Uzoma Nwamuo; Ugwunagbo; Chief Ejiofor Okeudo, Bende; Nze Tony Onyenuforo, Aba North; and Mr John Onyemaechi, Umuahia South.
Others Mr Augustine Amalaha, Isiala Ngwa North, Elder Uju Nwarie, Ukwa West; Nze Ngozi Nwoko; Aba South, Isiala Ngwa South, Mr Onyebuchi Ubah, Aba South, and Mr Aham Clement, Osisioma.
The rest are Mr Ume Okpara, Ohafia; Hon Peter Igwe, Umunneochi; Mr Okorie Uchechi; Isuikwuato; Chief Chinedu Adindu, Ikwuano; Mr Nzerem Kalu Nzerem, Arochukwu; and Prince Billy Amaechi; Obingwa.
In his reaction to the development, a stakeholder of the party in Ohuhu in Umuahia North local government area, Hon Obilor Ogbonna said it was the result of their hard work and the support from Emenike.
“In fact what happened was the strengthening of the foundation we have built over the years. What remains now is for us to consolidate on the achiements with a view to preparing for the state congress,” he added.
Addressing journalists in Umuahia, the state capital on the eve of the congresses, the chairman of the Congress Committee, Hon Israel Goli, had assured members of the party that it would be free and transparent.
Goli, who is the member representing Nembe/Brass federal constituency in the House of Representatives had also denied the report that there is a faction of the party in the state saying the party leadership is not aware of it.
The chairman had expressed surprise that a faction of the party led by Hon Donatus Nwankpa had inaugurated ward executive committees for the 184 wards in the state even when the party had directed otherwise.
He had equally confirmed that the state Ward Congress Committee, which he was also the chairman had submitted the list of the winners of the exercise, insisting that any list other than that is a nulity.
According to him: “Any list not signed by me as the chairman of the Ward Congress Committee for the state and the secretary is unacceptable. Of course I know the list we submitted, which we have a copy of.
