Saints Peter’s multipurpose cooperative society has launched one thousand units of housing estates in order to address the housing deficit for the low-income earners.
While speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the launching, the President of the Cooperative society, Amaechi Ajana, explained that what would make this SPM estate stand out from others is because this is an estate that is driven by people.
According to him, “We are starting from the consumer ends, those who need this house, even though we are structuring it, we have to obey the law and regulations in getting building approval, but we also look into the kind of approval that fit into the need of our people.
“We cannot go and started building for the people who you know that their income is low, you have to build the kind of house they can be able to afford if not, we won’t see people live in”.
Speaking on a bill moved by Senator representing Kogi west federal constituency, Senator Smart Adeyemi, on the house rent should be paid monthly, he said such bill cannot work and such kind of bill will kill the economy in the country.
He stated that if you want to bring down the cost of anything, it has to come down from the point of production and not consumption ends.
While explaining further, Ajana explained that “When you spend a lot of money to access the land, you know what it cost, and also building the materials, what you have to do is to come back to the drawing board and look at how do we can bring down the cost of the land, and components of the building in such a way that it would be affordable and you also look at the other around the side of employment, by the time Senate address all these, the cost of living in Abuja will be reduced.”
He also suggests that there should be competition in cement production companies in the country, but in a situation where one man has a monopoly on production, the price would become high.
At the launching, the Cooperative legal adviser,Barrister Araoha Igbom, who spoke on the possibility of achieving this, said this cooperative society is going to be done in phases and everything is going to be done once, so the first phase is what we would embark on now.
“What we have done in the past such as our investment and tracking record and normal saving, and we have delivered all our promises and on that note, we believe that we scale through this and delivered”.
Also speaking ,Rex Uzoagbala, said ,“This is a wonderful opportunity and I called it big privilege because such of opportunity doesn’t come all the time ,and having opportunity to be part of pioneer that start this great initiative,I think is a very big opportunity.
He, however, encourage people to subscribe to SPM estate because anything am doing and I feel is fine ,I will recommend it to my love once to key so that they can benefits what am benefiting.
