Governor Abdullahi Sule has reneged on his pledge not to seek any public office after completing his current second and final term in 2027.
The 66-year-old politician reversed his stance on Friday afternoon, declaring his intention to contest the senatorial seat of Nasarawa North in the 2027 general election.
“I came in only to be a governor. I did not come in to be a chairman, a senator, or a member of the House of Representatives. I don’t have any aspirations for those offices. I have no aspiration of becoming even president. I have no aspirations of that. I can tell you categorically that Abdullahi Sule would not go for Senate after leaving office.
“By the time I finish my eight years, I can do whatever I want to do. You can take it from me confidently that I have no intention to run for the office of a senator. You can keep this tape and play it one day,” the Governor said on Channels Television’s Politics Today in January 2024.
In a Facebook post, however, over two years after the vow, his Special Assistant on Social Media, Ango Ngharni Emmanuel, said the Governor “has accepted the clarion call to contest for the legislative seat in 2027”.
The Governor had come under immense pressure recently to contest and represent Nasarawa North in the Nigerian Senate from members of the ruling party, particularly political appointees and beneficiaries of his administration.
Born on December 26, 1959, Sule was first elected Governor in 2019, succeeding Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, who was nicknamed the Architect of Modern Nasarawa.
