Ghanaian police have arrested 25 Nigerians suspected of operating an international cybercrime group after a planned raid on a hideout in Dodowa, Greater Accra Region.
The arrest followed weeks of surveillance and intelligence gathering by a 12-man tactical unit working with the Cybercrime Unit and officials from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA).
During the operation, over 40 laptops and 25 phones were taken as evidence.
Investigators believe the gadgets were used to carry out online scams that targeted people both in Ghana and abroad.
The raid began after a Nigerian man contacted Ghana’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-GH), claiming he had been kidnapped and forced to engage in cybercrime.
His identity was later confirmed through his mother in Nigeria.
Further checks showed he had already been declared missing in Nigeria.
His report led officers to uncover that nearly 20 others were also held against their will and made to take part in online fraud.
The group is suspected of using phishing and other deceptive methods to trick people globally.
All 25 suspects are now in police custody.
Forensic experts are currently examining the seized items to uncover the full extent of the group’s activities and possible links to global online fraud networks.
Ghanaian authorities say they are determined to continue using intelligence and working with other countries to fight cybercrime and keep their digital space safe.
