Maurene Comey, a veteran federal prosecutor involved in major cases including those of Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell, and music executive Sean “Diddy” Combs, has been dismissed from her role at the U.S.
Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. The Department of Justice has not publicly explained the reason for her removal, according to several news outlets.
Comey, who had been with the department since 2015, played a key role in several high-profile prosecutions.
Her departure comes shortly after her team failed to secure racketeering and sex trafficking convictions against Combs. Instead, the rapper was found guilty on lesser charges earlier this month.
Sources say Comey was not given a reason for her firing. She is the daughter of former FBI Director James Comey, who was dismissed by Donald Trump in 2017 during his first term as president.
Trump, now serving another term, has reportedly voiced concerns about having any member of the Comey family in his administration.
The firing comes amid a wave of dismissals within the Justice Department. Attorney General Pam Bondi has removed several lawyers, including those who worked on investigations involving Trump himself.
Last week, more than 20 staff members tied to Special Counsel Jack Smith’s probes into Trump’s actions during and after the 2020 election were also dismissed.
Prosecutors involved in the Capitol riot cases have also reportedly lost their jobs.
Meanwhile, the administration is facing criticism for its handling of files related to Epstein.
Bondi initially said she would release a client list connected to Epstein’s network but recently stated there was no incriminating information to disclose.
Trump has also publicly criticized some of his supporters for raising concerns over the matter.
Separately, James Comey is now under investigation for statements made to Congress regarding the Russia election interference probe, which ended without charges against Trump.
