Six persons have been confirmed dead and 14 others injured in a fatal road crash along the Nkalagu axis of the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway.
The incident occurred close to the Nkalagu flyover along the expressway at about 9:30 am.
Confirming the incident, the State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Henry Igwe, said 22 persons were involved in the auto crash and attributed the cause of the accident to dangerous overtaking involving a commercial Toyota bus and a truck.
He disclosed that some of the injured victims were taken to Annunciation and Orthopaedic Hospitals Enugu by the officers of the command and the Red Cross while others were taken to General Hospital, Ezzamgbo, Ebonyi State, for medical attention.
Meanwhile, a resident of the area, Mr Odinaka Emmanuel Eze, who expressed sadness over the incessant fatal road crashes along the axis, said that the most dangerous road to ply within the South East region is the Nkalagu boundary and Nkwo Nkalagu portion of the expressway.
“The road is so dangerous because of the one lane being plied by motorists along the axis. The hard concrete central demarcation does not permit vehicles to veer off the road when faced with reckless and dangerous drivers on the only free one-lane road.
In 2019, the past administration started the dualisation of the Enugu – Abakaliki Expressway from the Nkalagu boundary with the construction of a flyover at Nkalagu junction.
