Elder Statesman, Former Governor Ezeife Dies At 85

Abuja, Nigeria – Chukwuemeka Ezeife, a beloved elder statesman and former governor of Anambra State, passed away peacefully at the Federal Medical Centre in Abuja on Thursday evening, December 14th, 2023, at the age of 85.

His family confirmed the news in a statement issued by Chief Rob Nwakaire Ezeife, who described Ezeife’s passing as a “promotion to glory” and hailed him as a “most distinguished son of the Ezeife Dynasty of Igbo-Ukwu.”

Ezeife served as the first Executive Governor of Anambra State during the short-lived Third Republic from 1992 to 1993. He was a widely respected figure, known for his dedication to public service, outspoken advocacy for the Igbo community, and commitment to national unity.

Prior to his foray into politics, Ezeife had a distinguished career in the civil service, rising to the position of Federal Permanent Secretary. He also served as a political adviser to the President and even ran for the presidency himself in 2007.

Beyond his official roles, Ezeife was a revered elder statesman, known for his wisdom, eloquence, and unwavering belief in the potential of Nigeria and its people. He remained a vocal advocate for good governance, social justice, and peaceful coexistence throughout his life.

The Ezeife family statement did not disclose the cause of death, but it expressed gratitude for the outpouring of condolences and promised to share more details about the deceased’s life and the arrangements for his state burial in due course.

Ezeife’s death is a significant loss to Nigeria, Anambra State, and the Igbo community. He leaves behind a legacy of public service, unwavering dedication to his people, and a constant pursuit of a more just and prosperous nation. His absence will be deeply felt, but his memory and contributions will continue to inspire generations to come.
