Abuja, Nigeria: The Nigerian government expressed its deepest condolences on Sunday, February 4th, 2024, following the passing of Namibian President Hage Geingob. President Geingob, a prominent figure in the fight for his country’s independence and a dedicated leader, died in Windhoek at the age of 82.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a press statement highlighting President Geingob’s contributions to Namibia and expressing Nigeria’s solidarity with the mourning nation. The statement described him as “a Pan-Africanist par excellence and a Nationalist” whose efforts in securing Namibia’s independence in 1990 would be remembered. It further commended his leadership in establishing Namibia as a leading African democracy and fostering strong bilateral and multilateral ties with Nigeria.
“The late President Geingob was a friend of Nigeria,” the statement declared, emphasizing the close relationship between the two nations. “Nigeria is indeed saddened by his passing and stands with Namibia in this period of national grief.”
The statement concluded with a message of peace and strength, offering “fortitude to bear the irreparable loss” to President Geingob’s family, the Namibian government, and the people of Namibia.
