Young Voices Take Center Stage As ECOFEPA Holds Summit In S/Leone

By Omonu YG Nelson

In a bid to ensure Intergenerational Justice, the Female Parliamentary Association (ECOFEPA) in conjunction with Parliament of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has hosted a Regional Summit on “Integrating Young Voices in Governance.”

In an address, the First Lady of Sierra Leone, Fatima Maada Bio, declared that: “the gathering, which gets underway, in Freetown, on Friday, February 9, 2024, is a “testament to ECOFEPA’s dedication to youth empowerment, saw young people, policymakers, and civil society organizations engage in a crucial dialogue about ensuring their voices are heard in decision-making processes.”

Opening the Summit, the outgoing Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament lauded the spirit of resilience embodied by both Freetown and ECOFEPA. “It is no coincidence that this vital discussion takes place in a city symbolising strength and courage,” he remarked, expressing gratitude to the host nation for its warm hospitality.

Echoing this sentiment, the President of ECOFEPA, Hon Veronica Kadie Sesay, emphasised the organization’s unwavering commitment to amplifying the voices of young people. “We believe their perspectives are crucial for shaping a more just and equitable future,” highlighting the Summit’s aim to translate policy into concrete action.

Throughout the day, young participants actively engaged in discussions, sharing their concerns and proposing innovative solutions. One young leader urged fellow attendees to “stay true to yourselves and leverage your differences as strengths, not sources of division.” This sentiment resonated with many, underscoring the importance of fostering unity and collaboration across generations.

The Summit also acknowledged the significant support provided by the ECOWAS Parliament. “Their allocation dedicated to female consultation and women’s empowerment is a vital step towards achieving true intergenerational justice,” remarked a prominent panelist.

As the Summit concluded, a sense of optimism prevailed. The open exchange of ideas and the commitment to collaboration between young people and policymakers offered a promising glimpse into a future where intergenerational justice becomes a reality. By bridging the gap between generations and ensuring young voices are heard, the Summit participants paved the way for a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
