ECOWAS Finalises Designs For Ultra-Modern JBP At Jendema-Bo Waterside Bo, Sierra Leone

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has finalised the architectural and engineering designs for a new ultra-modern Joint Border Post (JBP) to be constructed at the Jendema-Bo Waterside border between Sierra Leone and Liberia. This marks a significant step towards facilitating smoother cross-border trade and free movement of people and goods along the Praia-Dakar-Abidjan Corridor.

“This new JBP is yet another major regional integration intervention being provided by the ECOWAS Commission,” said Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, highlighting the project’s importance. “It will not only improve the border crossing experience for officials and travelers but also complement the ongoing project to transform the transport corridor into a supranational economic development zone.”

Key features of the JBP include:

*Side-by-side border controls: Officials from both Sierra Leone and Liberia will work together in the same facility, streamlining procedures and reducing processing times.

*Extensive data sharing: Interconnected systems will enable efficient information exchange, enhancing security and transparency.

*Modern infrastructure: The JBP will boast state-of-the-art facilities for customs, immigration, border security, and other services.

*Social amenities: The project will also include provisions for community citizens, such as markets, healthcare facilities, and rest areas.

The project timeline:

*February 2024: Finalization of engineering designs and tender documents.

*March 2024: Publication of tender notice for selecting a construction contractor.

*September 2024: Expected commencement of construction works.

The JBP project aligns with ECOWAS’ broader vision of creating a borderless West Africa. Once completed, it will serve as a model for future joint border initiatives in the region.
