Protest Over Band A Tariff Hike: NLC Urges Reversal Before Negotiation

By ABAH SUNDAY, Abuja

The Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, on Monday insisted that the federal government must reverse the band A electricity tariff before negotiating with the union, as it embarked on picketing the offices of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, and the distribution companies, DisCos across the country.
Recall the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, on April 3, 2024, announced the approval of a new electricity tariff for band A customers.

Consequently, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC, in an ultimatum dated May 3, 2024, issued to NERC to return to the status quo before or on 12 May, 2024, expressed grave concerns over the significant increase in electricity tariffs from N65/kWh to N225/kWh for the Band A class of consumers.

The unions condemned the decision, considering it morally reprehensible and a blatant disregard for the challenges faced by Nigerians.

Speaking at the Federal Ministry of Power, also known as Power House, Abuja, NLC president Joe Ajaero said the government must return to the status- quo before any negotiation with the workers.

The Power Minister, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, who was absent because he was reportedly attending the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting sent the Permanent Secretary, Alhaji Mamudan Mamman.

Mamman told the protesting unions that owing to the National Assembly intervention, the Minister was set to invite the workers to negotiate the tariff.
