Kano Ulama Warns Tinubu Against Escalating Emirship Tussle

Omonu YG Nelson

A group of prominent Islamic scholars and leaders in Kano State, known as the Kano Ulama, have issued a statement calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intervene in the ongoing crisis in the Emirate of Kano to prevent escalation and maintain peace in the state.

The Ulama, comprising of respected figures such as Shaykh Abdullahi Uwais Limanci, Shaykh Ibrahim Khalil, and others, expressed concern over the recent developments in the Emirate, which they believe have the potential to degenerate into chaos if not handled carefully.

The crisis revolves around the Kano State Emirates Law, which was amended by the State House of Assembly and assented to by the Governor. However, a court case challenging the law has sparked tensions, with one party seeking to enforce the court order through violent means.

The Kano Ulama emphasized that while the State Governor has a responsibility to maintain order, the use of force or violent resistance is not acceptable and could lead to further conflict. They urged President Tinubu to allow the people of Kano State to resolve their differences peacefully, without resorting to violence or force.

The statement read, “We call on Mr. President to allow the people of Kano State to resolve these issues amicably without the use of any force and loss of lives. Kano State is one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria, and we want to assure Mr. President that we shall reach out to contenders to ensure peace reigns in the state.”

The Kano Ulama reiterated their commitment to peace and prosperity in the state and urged all parties involved to seek civil means of resolving their differences. They also extended their gratitude to President Tinubu for his leadership and called on him to continue working towards maintaining peace and stability in the nation.

The full list of signatories includes:
