According to the Federal Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursement reports by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Nigeria received a total of N1.42 trillion from federal allocations in the first five months of 2024.
This amount represents 73% of the N1.95 trillion received by states and 75% of the N1.88 trillion allocated to the federal government during the same period.
“The increase in allocation to LGAs is a significant step towards empowering grassroots development,” said a spokesperson for the Federal Account Allocation Committee. “We are committed to ensuring that resources are distributed fairly and efficiently to support the needs of local communities.”
The NBS data shows a notable increase in allocations across each month from 2023 to 2024 for January to May, with a 47% increase in the amount LGAs received, rising from N963.9 billion in the same period of 2023.
Interestingly, the top 10 LGAs that received the most allocations this year are all located in Lagos state, with the top 20 LGAs also being from Lagos state.
“This is a testament to the state’s commitment to effective governance and resource management,” said a representative from the Lagos State Government. “We will continue to work towards ensuring that our LGAs receive the support they need to drive development and improve the lives of our citizens.”
The increased allocation to LGAs is expected to have a positive impact on grassroots development and service delivery in Nigeria.
