The Benin delegation to the ECOWAS Parliament presented its report on the country’s progress and challenges at the ongoing First Ordinary Session of the year 2024.
The report highlighted efforts towards community convergence points, including legislative elections and political reforms.
“The national security situation is marked by three phenomena: terrorism, transnational criminal organizations, and inter-community conflicts,” stated the report.
The report also addressed human rights issues, noting that Benin’s Human Rights Commission operates normally, despite management difficulties.
The delegation called on the ECOWAS Commission and Parliament to take measures to resolve difficulties hindering the free movement of persons and goods.
“In conclusion, we renew our congratulations on your brilliant election as the first woman to head the Community parliament,” said the delegation.
“ECOWAS must take comprehensive measures to address the challenges affecting the free movement of persons and goods,” urged the Benin delegation.
The report emphasised the need for collective action to address regional security and human rights challenges, promoting a stronger ECOWAS community.
Republic of Benin is represented at the ECOWAS Parliament by a five-member delegation consisting of the following: Honorable Cécile Ahoumenou (Head of Delegation); Honorable Jeremy ADOMAHOU Honorable Salifou ISSA Honorable Nassirou BAKO-ARIFARI Honorable Abdel Kamel Bio Sika OUASSAGARI.
