A heartbreaking incident has come to light in Taraba State, Nigeria, where a 13-year-old girl, Bridget Samuel, was subjected to severe torture by her guardians, Bulus Bitonopa and his wife, on suspicion of theft.
According to the Taraba State Commissioner of Police, David Iloyanomon, “The victim was subjected to severe cruel and inhumane treatment by the suspect… The command under my watch will not tolerate such a horrific act, and the suspect will be charged to court for justice to prevail.”
The victim, who is currently receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Center (FMC) in Jalingo, narrated her ordeal: “They tied my hands with rubber and burnt it with hot water and pepper… My uncle’s wife boiled water with pepper and poured it on me, and I remained tied for several hours.”
The girl’s uncle, who rescued her, said: “I saw her condition and untied her, despite her aunt’s insults. I took her to the hospital, and she was given injections. Her elder brother later took her to Jalingo for further treatment.”
The police commissioner has assured that justice will be served, and the suspects will face the full wrath of the law. This incident has sparked outrage and calls for greater protection of children’s rights in Nigeria.
