In a bold move, the National Council of NGOs and CSOs in Nigeria (NCNCSON), Taraba State Chapter, has issued a statement calling on the government to establish a grievance mechanism situation room to address the growing concerns of citizens. This demand comes amidst a backdrop of widespread protests, social unrest, and growing discontent with the state of governance in Nigeria.
According to the statement signed by Secretary Mr. Mike Adiel, the council “shares the pain and suffering caused by bad governance at all levels and is committed to the fight for good governance.” The council also honored the memory of those who have lost their lives during protests and extended sympathy to those whose properties were looted or destroyed.
In a bid to find a solution to the growing unrest, NCNCSON resolved to embrace dialogue and appealed to fellow comrades to take advantage of the window opened by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to engage in discussions with the government. The council believes that this dialogue presents an opportunity for meaningful engagement and resolution of the issues plaguing the nation.
The statement outlined several key demands, including:
– The establishment of a grievance mechanism situation room at all levels, comprising representatives from civil society organizations, labor unions, youth groups, women’s groups, media, trade unions, religious and traditional leaders, and government officials.
– The grievance mechanism committee should be mandated to collect, analyze, and forward grievances to the government within ten days.
– The committee should also ensure the implementation of all agreed-upon issues and continue to mediate between the government and the people.
NCNCSON emphasized that protests for good governance are not unique to Nigeria, but a global phenomenon. They urged Nigerians to unite and take advantage of the dialogue opportunity to agree on essential matters and monitor their implementation.
The council reiterated its commitment to being the voice of the voiceless and standing with the people of Taraba and Nigeria. “We are always ready to provide the platform and technical assistance needed,” the statement concluded.
By demanding a grievance mechanism and embracing dialogue, NCNCSON aims to promote good governance, address citizen concerns, and foster a more inclusive and responsive government. As the country navigates these challenging times, the council’s call for dialogue and accountability offers a beacon of hope for a better future.
