Makurdi, Nigeria – In a significant step towards addressing the humanitarian challenges in Benue State, the government today hosted a high-level delegation from the United Nations, led by the UNHCR Assistant High Commissioners and Her Excellency the German Ambassador to Nigeria, at Government House, Makurdi.
Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia. expressed delight at the growing collaboration with the UN, stating, “Today’s visit marks a significant milestone in our partnership with the UN to tackle humanitarian challenges and deliver lasting solutions for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in our dear state.”
A major highlight of the meeting was the allocation of the old Ministry of Information Complex as the UN’s “Red-Roof” hub in Makurdi, aimed at streamlining coordination and support for humanitarian efforts. Governor Alia noted, “This hub will serve as a critical base for our joint efforts to restore lives and livelihoods across the affected Local Government Areas.”
Furthermore, the state government launched a housing project to provide shelter and essential services for displaced persons. Governor Alia emphasised, “Our goal is to restore dignity and prosperity to every displaced individual in Benue State.”
Expressing gratitude to the UN Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres, and the Nigerian UN office, Governor Hyacinth Alia said, “Together, we are building a future where every displaced individual in Benue State can live with dignity and prosperity.”
The UNHCR Assistant High Commissioners praised the state government’s commitment to addressing humanitarian challenges, saying, “We are impressed by the state government’s efforts to provide lasting solutions for IDPs. This partnership is a testament to our collective resolve to make a difference in the lives of those affected.”
Her Excellency the German Ambassador to Nigeria, Annett Günther, added, “Germany is committed to supporting Nigeria in addressing its humanitarian challenges. This initiative is a significant step towards providing sustainable solutions for IDPs in Benue State.”
The visit and launch of humanitarian initiatives mark a significant step towards addressing the plight of IDPs in Benue State, with the state government and UN working together to build a brighter future for all.
