ECOWAS Parliament Speaker Tasks Member States On Speedy Implementation Of Free Movement Protocol

Banjul, The Gambia – August 26, 2024: The Speaker of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament, Hon. Memounatou Ibrahima, has called on member states to accelerate the implementation of the free movement protocol.

Speaking at a delocalised meeting in The Gambia, Ibrahima underscored the critical role of free movement in realizing the full potential of regional integration.

“The free movement of persons is the cornerstone of ECOWAS,” Ibrahima stated. “It is essential for fostering economic growth, promoting cultural exchange, and strengthening regional security.”

The meeting, underway in Banjul, brought together members of ECOWAS Parliament committee on Free Movement to discuss the progress, challenges, and opportunities related to the free movement protocol. Participants shared experiences, identified bottlenecks, and explored innovative solutions to overcome obstacles.

Ibrahima acknowledged the progress made in implementing the protocol buemphasizesed the need for more decisive action. “While we have made strides in certain areas, there are still significant challenges that hinder the full realization of free movement,” she said. “These include weak border management systems, divergent national regulations, and infrastructure deficiencies.”

The ECOWAS Parliament Speaker called on member states to strengthen their commitment to the free movement protocol and take concrete steps to address these challenges. She urged governments to invest in border infrastructure, harmonise immigration procedures, and promote awareness of the rights and benefits of free movement.

“The future of ECOWAS depends on our ability to create a truly integrated region,” Ibrahima concluded. “By accelerating the implementation of the free movement protocol, we can unlock the immense potential of our region and improve the lives of our citizens.”

The meeting in Banjul is expected to produce recommendations to guide ECOWAS member states in their efforts to enhance free movement within the region.
