The recent elevation of China-Nigeria relations to a Strategic Partnership has been hailed as a significant milestone in Nigeria’s quest for development.

Dr Olakekan Babatunde, a Research Fellow at the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) Abuja, stated this at the Mid-Autumn Festival which took place at the weekend in Abuja. He described the move as a “new vista” for Nigeria’s development.

“This elevation is a recognition of Nigeria’s performance since 1971 when the Giant of Africa established diplomatic ties with China,” He said, the development “It means that Nigeria has been promoted to a higher position, and we should take advantage of this opportunity to deliver people-to-people programs and actions that will elevate the current sufferings of Nigerians.”

According to Dr. Babatunde, the Strategic Partnership will result in robust development, stability, and security in the West Africa sub-region. He quoted President Bola Tinubu as saying, “The comprehensive partnership should result in robust development, stability, and security in the West Africa sub-region.”

Dr. Babatunde emphasiaed that the partnership is not just about economic benefits but also about mutual trust and confidence. “When I don’t have trust in you, I won’t give you promotion,” he said. “This elevation means that Nigeria and China have elevated their partnership to a higher level, and it will benefit the generality of Nigerian people.”

The partnership is expected to boost trade, investment, infrastructure development, and people-to-people exchanges between Nigeria and China. Dr. Babatunde highlighted the 10 partnership actions outlined by President Xi Jinping, including virtual learning and civilization, trade prosperity, industrial chain cooperation, and green development.

“The key is action,” Dr. Babatunde emphasized. “We need to take these documents and turn them into action. We need to work closely with China to create sustainable, long-term solutions for development.”

Overall, the elevation of China-Nigeria relations to a Strategic Partnership is seen as a significant step forward for Nigeria’s development, and it is hoped that both countries will work together to achieve mutual benefits and prosperity.
