Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed i an air strike on Beirut, Lebanon, according to Israel’s military and Hezbollah.
The air strike, which occurred on September 27, 2024, targeted Hezbollah’s leaders at their headquarters in south Beirut, also killing Ali Karki, commander of Hezbollah’s southern front, and additional Hezbollah commanders.
Nasrallah, 64, led the Iran-backed group for over 32 years, guiding Hezbollah to prominence in Lebanon. He was known for standing up to Israel and defying the United States, earning him both admiration and criticism. Al Jazeera’s Stefanie Dekker described Nasrallah as “a larger-than-life figure” who turned Hezbollah into a disciplined force.
The strike injured 91 people and leveled six apartment buildings, according to Lebanon’s health ministry. This attack is part of an escalating campaign of Israeli attacks on Lebanon, resulting in over 720 deaths and displacing more than 211,000 people since Monday.
Hezbollah confirmed Nasrallah’s death, pledging to continue fighting Israel “in support of Gaza and Palestine, and in defense of Lebanon”.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei urged Muslims worldwide to stand with Hezbollah, stating Israel failed to significantly harm Hezbollah’s structure.
Israel’s military views Nasrallah’s death as significant but acknowledges ongoing threats from Hezbollah, which they believe still possesses tens of thousands of rockets. The region awaits Iran and Hezbollah’s response, with many questioning how they will regroup and counterattack.
