Taraba State Governor Dr Agbu Kefas has Congratulated Nigeria for attaining the age of Sixty Four years of independence, reminding Nigerians that Nigeria is the only country that “we have and we must give it all that we have in the form of patriotic service and deep commitment.”

He disclosed this in Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary message in Taraba State on Tuesday.

The message read in part, “On behalf of myself, the Government and the good people of Taraba State, I rejoice with His Excellency, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces and all citizens of this great country, home and in the Diaspora.

“I wish to use this anniversary of our dear country to remind all Nigerians that Nigeria is the only country that we have and we must give it all that we have in the form of patriotic service and deep commitment.

“This will enable it attain the level of peace and development that is required for it to take its rightful place in the comity of developed nations.”

In another development, Gov Kefas has pardon scores of prisoners in a prerogative of mercy as part of the October 1st celebration package.

Summitpost Online News reports that, On October 1, 1960 Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. The country became a sovereign nation after nearly a century of colonial rule.

Key Figures: Nnamdi Azikiwe (First President of Nigeria), Obafemi Awolowo (First Premier of Western Region), Ahmadu Bello (First Premier of Northern Region) and Anthony Enahoro (Moved the motion for independence).

Historical Events: In 1914: British colonial rule began in Nigeria, 1946: Nigerian nationalism gained momentum, 1957: Nigeria gained internal self-government and in 1960: Nigeria gained full independence.

Post-Independence Challenges: Ethnic and regional tensions, Economic underdevelopment, Corruption and mismanagement, Military coups and political instability.

Achievements: Economic growth and industrialization, Infrastructure development, Education and healthcare reforms, Cultural and artistic renaissance.
