President Paul Biya Defies “Death” Rumours, Returns After 49 Days
President Paul Biya returned to Cameroon on Monday, October 21, ending a 49-day absence that sparked widespread speculation about his health and fueled rumours of his death.
The 91-year-old leader arrived at Nsimalen International Airport at 4:37 pm, where he was greeted by a warm welcome from his supporters, government ministers, and high-ranking officials.
Biya’s prolonged absence from public view had created uncertainty and fueled speculation about his health. His failure to attend key international meetings in New York and France, where he was expected to be present, further added to the concerns.
“The President’s absence was shrouded in mystery, and the government’s silence only fueled speculation,” said Dr. Christopher Fomunyoh, a senior associate at the National Democratic Institute.

In response to the growing speculation, Cameroon’s Interior Minister, Paul Atanga Nji, banned discussions on the President’s health, warning that anyone spreading “false information” would face consequences.
“This move was seen as an attempt to intimidate the press and stifle free speech,” said Reporters Without Borders’ Africa representative, Arnaud Froger.
Biya’s return comes at a critical time, just a year before the presidential elections, where the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) hopes to maintain its grip on power after 42 years.
“The President’s return will likely bolster the ruling party’s chances in the upcoming elections,” said Professor Tatah Mentan, a political analyst at the University of Yaoundé.
