The Taraba State government has been called upon to establish a dedicated recreational center for older persons in the state, a proposal made by Dr. Filister Irarimam Musa, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Social Justice and Re-Integration, at the 2024 International Day of Older Persons event.
The event, held at the Pastoral Center in Mile Six, Jalingo, highlighted the growing need to improve the quality of life for senior citizens in the state.
Dr. Musa appealed directly to Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, urging him to prioritize the establishment of a recreational center that would provide older persons with a vibrant space to socialize, engage in lifelong learning, and access entertainment.
She emphasized the importance of such facilities in promoting the independence, health, and well-being of the elderly population.
Additionally, she called for the creation of a specialized care center tailored to the unique health needs of older persons, including routine check-ups, counseling, and social support.
The Commissioner also advocated for subsidizing the medical treatment costs for older persons at government healthcare facilities, arguing that financial support would alleviate the burden many elderly people face in accessing care.
“This financial support would ensure that older persons receive the quality care they deserve without compromising their financial security,” Dr. Musa said.
She also urged society to challenge negative stereotypes about aging and instead recognize the valuable contributions that older persons make to the community.
Governor Dr. Agbu Kefas, represented by the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Aminu Abdullahi Alkali, assured the gathering that the state government is committed to improving the welfare of older persons.
He acknowledged the vital roles senior citizens play in society and promised continued support for initiatives aimed at enhancing their dignity and quality of life.
The Governor highlighted the importance of this year’s theme, “Aging with Dignity,” and assured the public that the state would continue to address the needs of its elderly population.
As part of the event, experts delivered various presentations, including a health talk by Dr. Ayuba Gagare and a discussion on the role of aging in community by Associate Professor Joel Nsofor from Taraba State University.
Additionally, Dr. Julius Usman presented a goodwill message on behalf of the National Director of the Senior Citizens Center, commending Governor Kefas for his commitment to improving the lives of elderly people in Taraba State. In recognition of his efforts, senior citizens presented Governor Kefas with an award of excellence.
