Okpella Takes Bold Steps Towards Sustainable Security Amid Herders-Farmers Clashes

By Omonu YG Nelson

In a bid to address the persistent security challenges plaguing Okpella, HRH Engr Lukman Akemokue has convened a joint interactive session with key stakeholders, including the Okpella Hunters Association and the Fulani & Hausa communities.

The meeting aimed to uncover the root causes of the incessant herders-farmers clashes, kidnappings, and murders in the area.

Important highlight from the session was the acknowledgment that while nomadic Fulanis are often linked to crops destruction and kidnappings, resident Fulanis have also fallen victim to cattle rustling, kidnappings, and killings. This revelation underscores the complexity of the issue, which cannot be solely attributed to ethnic tensions.

As HRH Engr Lukman Akemokue emphasised, “The perpetrators should simply be labelled with their proper names: CRIMINALS!” This stance marks a crucial shift away from ethnic blame-shifting and towards a more constructive approach.

To strengthen security in the region, His Royal Highness has established a collaborative forum comprising local hunters and Fulani herders. This initiative seeks to resolve disputes arising from crops destruction through compensation and bolster security in the bushes. By fostering cooperation between these groups, Okpella can leverage the unique skills and knowledge of each to create a more secure environment.

Furthermore, consultations are underway to engage a seasoned security advisor and security consulting firms to enhance the existing local security architecture. This move demonstrates HRH Engr Lukman Akemokue’s commitment to exploring innovative solutions and tapping into expert knowledge to address the security challenges facing Okpella.

HRH Engr Lukman Akemokue’s vision for the New Okpella Project is clear: “We will not be measured by how our people are put in perpetual fear of criminality, but shall be judged by how every resident finds the security to pursue his happiness and prosperity.”

This statement encapsulates the project’s core objective: to create a secure and peaceful environment where residents can thrive.

With these proactive measures, Okpella is poised to become a beacon of sustainable security and peace. As the community works together to address its challenges, it is clear that a brighter future is on the horizon for Okpella.
