LND Faults PDP, APC For Leadership Failure—Unveils Alternative Party

The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has criticized Nigeria’s two major political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing them of fostering self-serving and dishonest leadership since their inception.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its Convener, Umar Ardo, Ph.D., the LND said the two parties, alongside others, have failed to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges, showing little intention of doing so.

“These parties have become instruments of imposition, where leadership selection is driven by personal ambition and manipulation rather than merit or democratic consensus,” the statement read.

The LND accused both the PDP and APC of perpetuating governance systems that prioritize patronage over public interest. It said the leadership produced by these parties is more focused on consolidating power than addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.

“This trajectory has resulted in deepening poverty, heightened insecurity, eroded public trust, and a national psyche weighed down by despair and cynicism,” Ardo said.

The LND said it offers an innovative, inclusive, and forward-thinking approach to rebuilding Nigeria’s political system. It emphasized its commitment to merit-based leadership selection, transparency, and institutional renewal.

“Unlike the PDP and APC, the LND’s foundation will be committed to restoring patriotism, honesty, and democratic values in the polity. Leadership selection within the LND will be predicated on merit, transparency, and robust competition,” Ardo said.

He added that the LND would focus on strengthening accountability mechanisms, reducing corruption and inefficiency, and fostering a merit-based society.

While rooted in Northern Nigeria, the LND aims to transcend regional and sectarian boundaries to promote national cohesion. Ardo said the group is expanding into Southern Nigeria to form a League of National Democrats capable of uniting citizens in pursuit of shared aspirations.

“The LND will prioritize inclusivity, recognizing Nigeria’s diversity as a source of strength,” Ardo noted.

The LND outlined its plans to address pressing national issues, including poverty, unemployment, insecurity, and corruption, through evidence-based policies. It also pledged to provide a platform for principled leaders disillusioned by the PDP and APC.

“Transforming the LND into a registered political party will reshape Nigeria’s political landscape. It will offer Nigerians a credible alternative aligned with their values and aspirations,” the statement added.

The LND called on Nigerians to join its movement, describing it as a rallying point for citizens committed to reclaiming their country and building a future defined by patriotism, justice, equity, and prosperity.
