The Catholic Diocese of Warri has suspended Rev. Fr. Daniel Okanatotor Oghenerukevwe from the exercise of sacred ministry, following his decision to enter into marriage in the United States.
According to a decree issued by Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, Bishop of Warri, Fr. Oghenerukevwe incurred a Latae Sententiae suspension in accordance with the provisions of Canon 1394 §1.
The suspension comes after Fr. Oghenerukevwe contacted the Diocese of Warri on November 30, 2024, requesting to be released from all canonical obligations and responsibilities associated with Holy Orders within the Roman Catholic Church. However, before the process could be initiated, Fr. Oghenerukevwe entered into marriage with Ms. Dora Chichah at the Streams of Joy Church in Dallas, USA, on December 29, 2024.
By this action, Fr. Oghenerukevwe has been prohibited from presenting himself as a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Warri in any capacity. The Bishop of Warri stated, “He retains the right to petition for the revocation or amendment of this decree in accordance with Canon 1734 $I whenever he demonstrates a willingness to reform.”
The decree, which takes immediate effect, was issued on January 16, 2025, and was signed by Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, Bishop of Warri. The Bishop prayed that God would grant Fr. Oghenerukevwe the grace to reflect on this situation and guide him on the path of reconciliation.
The Catholic Church has strict rules regarding clerical celibacy, and priests are expected to remain unmarried and devoted to their spiritual duties. Fr. Oghenerukevwe’s decision to enter into marriage has been seen as a breach of these rules, leading to his suspension.
The Diocese of Warri has urged the faithful to pray for Fr. Oghenerukevwe, that he may reflect on his actions and seek reconciliation with the Church. The suspension serves as a reminder of the importance of adhering to the rules and regulations of the Catholic Church, particularly for those in positions of spiritual leadership.
The Catholic Diocese of Warri has assured the faithful that it will continue to uphold the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church, while also providing support and guidance to those who may have strayed from the path.
