Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, MTN, has assured subscribers of improved service delivery following the approval of a 50% tariff adjustment by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
With a subscriber base of 77 million, MTN stated on Tuesday that the tariff increase is essential to sustaining critical investments in the telecom sector, which contributes 14% to Nigeria’s GDP.
The decision has drawn strong criticism from advocacy groups and customers, who are concerned about the financial burden on subscribers.
MTN, however, emphasized that the tariff adjustment is a significant step toward ensuring the long-term sustainability of the sector while fostering economic growth.
“This tariff adjustment represents an important step towards addressing the impacts of the prevailing economic challenges on our business and industry,” said Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria.
“It will enable us to maintain the critical investments required to deliver reliable, high-quality services to Nigerians. We remain committed to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda and driving inclusive growth for all stakeholders,” Toriola added.
The telecom giant reiterated its commitment to empowering millions of Nigerians and businesses through improved connectivity and services while navigating the country’s challenging economic landscape.
