The Jigawa State Government has disclosed that damages incurred during the nationwide #EndBadGovernance protests in August 2024 amounted to a staggering N5 billion.
Barrister Bello Fanini, Chairman of the fact-finding committee and the state Commissioner for Justice, revealed the figure while presenting the committee’s findings to Governor Umar Namadi at the Government House in Dutse on Tuesday night.
Fanini reported that the extensive damage affected properties owned by the federal, state, and local governments, as well as private individuals. He also emphasized that the committee had developed a series of recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences of such incidents.
“The scale of destruction was unprecedented, impacting critical public infrastructure and private assets,” Fanini stated. “Our recommendations are designed to safeguard lives and property while promoting peace and stability in Jigawa.”
Responding to the report, Governor Namadi commended the committee for their thorough work and pledged to review and implement the recommendations.
“This report is crucial for understanding the impact of the protests and preventing future crises. The government is committed to protecting lives and property across the state,” Namadi affirmed.
The #EndBadGovernance protests, which began as a nationwide movement against perceived inefficiencies and corruption in governance, escalated in various parts of the country, leading to widespread destruction of property.
The report has sparked discussions among stakeholders on how to balance the right to protest with the need to maintain public safety and order.
