The United Kingdom has reaffirmed its robust defence partnership with Nigeria, pledging continued support in counter-insurgency operations and the fight against terrorism in the North-East region.
UK Minister of State for Defence, Lord Vernon Coaker, made the commitment during his visit to the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai (OPHK) in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
Addressing military officials, Coaker emphasized the enduring bilateral relationship between the UK and Nigeria, noting the shared commitment to addressing global and regional security challenges.
“Your conflict is our conflict, and your security is our security. The work you are doing to combat terrorism, particularly through Operation Hadin Kai, is commendable,” he said.
Coaker highlighted the UK’s contributions to Nigeria’s efforts, including counter-IED training, provision of equipment, and mentorship in establishing the Counter-IED Coordination Cell in the North-East. He also praised the Nigerian military for its dedication to restoring peace and stability in the region.
Maj.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, Theatre Commander of OPHK, expressed gratitude for the UK’s consistent support in combating insurgency.
“This visit validates the strong partnership between our nations. The UK’s support, especially in counter-IED operations and troop training, has been critical to our success,” Shaibu said.
