In a rare and symbolic event, the 1 Division Nigerian Army, Kaduna, held a full military funeral for its late mascot horse, Sgt. Dalet Akawala, on Saturday, January 25, 2025. The ceremony took place at the Division Headquarters Complex in Kawo, Kaduna, and was presided over by Colonel I.A. Akabike, Deputy Chief of Staff, Administration.
Sgt. Akawala, who represented the General Officer Commanding of 1 Division and Commander Sector 1 of Operation Fansan Yamma, Major General Mayirenso Saraso, passed away on January 24, 2025.
Speaking during the ceremony, Colonel Akabike highlighted the importance of the mascot, noting that the horse had become a cherished part of the Division’s identity and tradition.
Lt. Col. Musa Yahaya, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, described Sgt. Akawala as a symbol of loyalty and resilience.
“The Nigerian Army mourns the loss of Sgt. Dalet Danfari Akawala, who served the Division with unwavering loyalty. Today’s ceremony is our way of honoring a companion who embodied courage and brought pride to the Division,” Yahaya stated.
The funeral was attended by senior officers, soldiers, their families, and other personnel, demonstrating the deep respect and affection held for the mascot.
Sgt. Akawala’s legacy will continue to live on as a reminder of the traditions and spirit that define the Nigerian Army.
