The Ministry of Interior has announced a record-breaking ₦6 billion in revenue for 2024, marking a 50% increase compared to the previous year.
Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo revealed the figures during a media briefing in Abuja, attributing the growth to optimisation efforts and technological reforms. Key revenue sources included ₦3.2 billion from expatriate quota applications, ₦2.4 billion from marriage registrations, ₦392 million from citizenship applications, and ₦12 million from places of worship registrations.
Tunji-Ojo clarified that funds from expatriate quotas stemmed from application fees, not approvals, addressing concerns about a foreign influx. “This is application revenue, not necessarily approval,” he explained.
The minister praised the contributions of agencies like the Nigerian Correctional Service, Nigeria Immigration Service, and Federal Fire Service, highlighting reforms in citizenship verification and business permit processes.
With advanced technology integration and streamlined procedures, the ministry aims to surpass its 2024 achievements in 2025, positioning Nigeria as a more business-friendly nation. “Nigeria is now open for business,” Tunji-Ojo affirmed.
