The Federal Government has confirmed the deportation of 828 illegal immigrants from Nigeria in 2024. This was disclosed by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, during a media parley in Abuja on Tuesday.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo revealed that the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) executed the repatriations as part of efforts to enforce immigration laws and enhance national security. Although he did not specify the offences committed by the deported individuals, the minister emphasized that the government remains committed to addressing issues related to unlawful residency and border management.
“The Nigeria Immigration Service has been proactive in its operations, ensuring that foreign nationals residing in the country comply with established laws,” Tunji-Ojo stated.
He reiterated the government’s resolve to strengthen border security and prevent illegal migration, stressing the importance of compliance with Nigeria’s immigration regulations.
The deportations come as part of broader reforms aimed at improving the nation’s immigration system, ensuring that it supports legitimate business and tourism while addressing concerns about illegal activities.
Dr. Tunji-Ojo commended the NIS for its efforts and assured Nigerians that the ministry would continue to work towards a safer and more secure environment.
