Former Ogun State governorship candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Segun Showunmi, has called on Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, to remain vigilant against hypocritical allies and prioritize meaningful governance as he marks his 50th birthday.
In a statement released on Tuesday to celebrate the governor, Showunmi emphasized the importance of staying grounded and remembering the contributions of those who supported his rise to power.
“Beware of friends who loudly praise you today but may turn their backs on you when circumstances change,” he warned. “Leadership comes with challenges, and it’s vital to reconnect with yourself and stay focused on your responsibilities.”
Showunmi shared a leadership lesson from former military ruler General Ibrahim Babangida, reminding Fubara of the importance of treating those who supported him with respect. “When climbing the ladder of leadership, those who held the ladder for you may appear smaller as you ascend. However, if you neglect them, they may not provide the same support during difficult times,” he stated.
He urged Fubara to use his position to positively impact the lives of Rivers residents, create future leaders, and uphold the state’s legacy of greatness.
“Leadership is an opportunity to serve, and your tenure should reflect your commitment to bettering lives. Stay focused on your duties, and history will judge you kindly,” Showunmi said.
He also prayed for divine guidance in Fubara’s administration, expressing confidence in the governor’s ability to steer the state toward growth and prosperity.
As the Rivers governor celebrates his golden jubilee, Showunmi advised him to lead with integrity and prioritize the collective good over personal interests.
