Anti-cult Law: Gov Okpebholo Ushers In A New Dawn in Edo State*

Governor Monday Okpebholo has taken a firm and uncompromising stance against the menace of cultism with the passage and signing into law of the Secret Cult and Similar Activities (Prohibition) Law, 2025. This bold step, championed by His Excellency, Monday Okpebholo, demonstrates the Government’s commitment to restoring peace, security, and order in Edo State.
For too long, cultism has held our communities hostage. Once confined to academic institutions, cult-related activities have escalated into a dangerous social problem, threatening lives, disrupting businesses, and undermining the progress of Edo State.
The Edo State Government, having studied the devastating impact of cult-related violence, has taken the necessary and urgent step of enacting a law that imposes stiffer penalties on all those who participate in, sponsor, or facilitate cult activities.
This new law provides for 21 years imprisonment for individuals who financially or materially sponsor cultism; 10 years imprisonment and property demolition for those who harbor cultists or allow their property to be used for cult-related activities; 21 years imprisonment for cultists involved in assault, injury, or property destruction, and death penalty for those responsible for killings in furtherance of cult activities.
These measures are not intended to intimidate law-abiding citizens but rather to serve as a strong deterrent to those who have chosen to endanger the peace and security of Edo State.
This law is not just about punishment—it is about protecting lives and securing the future of Edo State. Cult activities have robbed many young people of their potential, turning them into instruments of violence rather than contributors to society. With this legislation, Edo people are taking Edo State back from the hands of criminals and ensuring that families, businesses, and communities can thrive without fear.
The demolition and confiscation of properties linked to cult activities is a deliberate move to ensure that crime does not pay. Those who aid and abet cultism will no longer have a hiding place in Edo State. The Government is sending a clear message: Edo State is for law-abiding citizens, not for criminals.
The success of this law depends not only on enforcement but also on public cooperation. We urge all residents of Edo State to report cult-related activities to law enforcement agencies; discourage youth involvement in cultism by promoting positive alternatives such as education, skills acquisition, and legitimate career paths; support the Government’s efforts in making Edo State a safe and prosperous place for all.
The Edo State Government remains committed to justice and fairness in implementing this law. While the Government will deal decisively with criminal elements, we also recognize the need for rehabilitation and social reintegration for those willing to renounce cultism. As part of Governor Okpebholo’s broader security strategy, the Government will continue to invest in youth empowerment programs, education, and employment opportunities to provide alternatives for young people at risk of being lured into cultism.
This is a historic moment in the fight against crime and insecurity in Edo State. His Excellency, Governor Monday Okpebholo, and the Edo State House of Assembly have demonstrated strong leadership in taking this decisive action. Now, it is up to all of us—Government agencies, security operatives, community leaders, parents, and citizens—to work together in ensuring the full implementation of this new law.
Edo State is moving forward, and we will not allow the forces of darkness to hold us back. Let this serve as a warning: cultism will no longer be tolerated in Edo State. The law is here, and it will be enforced.
Together, we will build a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Edo State.
