Vice President of Ogun State Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed Nigeria’s ability to overcome food insecurity, emphasizing that the country has no reason to experience hunger given its vast agricultural resources.
Speaking at the inauguration of Springfield Agro Limited’s Crop Protection Chemical Plant in Ogun State, Shettima—represented by Minister of State for Agriculture, Senator Sabi Abdullahi—highlighted Nigeria’s fertile land, favorable climate, and potential for year-round farming.
“We have immense agricultural potential, yet many farmers rely only on the rainy season, leaving farms dormant for months,” he noted. “The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (FMAFS) is working to change this by promoting all-season farming.”
Government’s Commitment to Agricultural Reform
Shettima stressed the government’s commitment to boosting agricultural output by supporting farmers through mechanization, technology, and improved access to fertilizers.
“Our immediate focus is rice production. We will ensure farmers are identified, registered, and provided with necessary support, including fertilizers—both organic and inorganic,” he said.
He also encouraged farmers to collaborate with their state ministries of agriculture as the government develops a comprehensive database for agricultural development.
Private Sector Investment in Agriculture
The launch of Springfield Agro Limited’s $12 million agrochemical plant marks a significant private-sector investment in Nigeria’s agricultural sector. Chairman of Kewalram Chanrai Group, N.G. Chanrai, underscored the company’s role in providing farm solutions and employment for over 500 Nigerians.
“Our new plant has an initial production capacity of 30 million liters of agrochemicals, expandable to 50 million liters. This investment reflects our long-term commitment to Nigeria’s agricultural growth,” Chanrai stated.
Ogun State’s Support for Agribusiness
Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, represented by Deputy Governor Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, praised Springfield Agro’s contributions and reaffirmed the state’s dedication to fostering a business-friendly environment.
“Ogun State remains a prime location for investment due to its strategic proximity to Lagos and business-friendly policies,” he said, urging more investors to explore opportunities in the state.
Strengthening Food Security Through Collaboration
The event highlighted the need for stronger public-private partnerships in agriculture to enhance food security, increase productivity, and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on food imports.
As the government pushes for agricultural transformation, experts say initiatives like Springfield Agro’s new facility could play a crucial role in ensuring food availability and economic growth across the country.
