Edwin Clark, Renowned Nigerian Leader, Dies at 97
Lagos, Nigeria – February 18, 2025
Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, a prominent Nigerian leader, politician, and elder statesman, has passed away at the age of 97. According to a statement released by his family, Clark died on Monday night, February 17, 2025.
Clark was a towering figure in Nigerian politics, known for his unwavering commitment to the development of the Niger Delta region and his advocacy for resource control and fiscal federalism. He served as Commissioner for Education in the Mid-Western Region from 1968 to 1971 and later as Commissioner for Finance and Establishment in the defunct Bendel State between 1972 and 1975.
At the federal level, Clark was appointed Commissioner for Information in 1975 and subsequently became a Senator from 1979 to 1983. He was also a leading voice for regional and national unity, serving as the leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), the South-South Peoples Assembly, and the Southern and Middle-Belt Leaders Forum (SMBLF).
“Chief Edwin Clark was a true patriot and a champion of the Niger Delta people,” said a statement from the PANDEF. “His passing is a great loss to our nation, and we mourn his departure with heavy hearts.”
Clark’s death comes just days after the passing of Afenifere leader, Pa Ayo Adebanjo, who died at the age of 96. The Nigerian government and people from all walks of life have been paying tribute to Clark, celebrating his life and legacy.
“Chief Clark was a remarkable individual who dedicated his life to the service of our nation,” said President Bola Tinubu in a statement. “His contributions to our country’s development will never be forgotten.”
The Clark family has announced that details of his funeral and burial will be released later.
