Former Labour MP Mike Amesbury has been sentenced to 10 weeks in jail after admitting to assaulting a man in his Cheshire constituency.
Amesbury, 55, who now sits as an independent MP for Runcorn and Helsby, pleaded guilty to attacking 45-year-old Paul Fellows.
The incident, which took place in the early hours of October 26, was caught on video, leading to Amesbury’s suspension from the Labour Party. Chester Magistrates’ Court heard that the attack stemmed from Amesbury’s “anger and loss of emotional control.”
Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram condemned the assault, highlighting that Amesbury continued to strike Fellows even after he fell to the ground. The magistrate noted that the attack might have escalated further had a bystander not stepped in.
Amesbury, once expected to set an example in public life, now faces time behind bars, marking a dramatic downfall for the former MP.
