The Nigerian government has called for a full investigation into the mysterious death of footballer Abubakar Lawal in Uganda.
Lawal, who played for Vipers Sports Club and was also a final-year student at Cavendish University, reportedly fell from the third floor of a shopping mall in Kajjansi.
The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) described the incident as suspicious and urged authorities to ensure transparency in the investigation. The Nigerian High Commission in Uganda has also demanded a full autopsy and a detailed probe into the circumstances leading to Lawal’s death.
According to police reports, Lawal had gone to the mall to visit his friend, Omary Naima, a Tanzanian national. Naima claimed she left him in her apartment preparing tea and went to a game center within the building. Shortly after, Lawal allegedly fell from the balcony. He was rushed to Entebbe Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Authorities in Uganda have launched an investigation, but Nigerian officials insist on a thorough and open inquiry to uncover the truth.
