A tragic military plane crash in Sudan has left at least 46 people dead and 10 others injured.
The Russian-built Antonov aircraft went down in a residential area of Omdurman, just after taking off from Wadi Seidna air base near the capital, Khartoum.
Authorities have not confirmed the cause of the crash, but military sources suggest a technical malfunction may be to blame. Among the victims are military officers, civilians, and a senior army commander. Several homes were damaged, and power outages followed the explosion.
Emergency teams quickly transported injured civilians, including children, to nearby hospitals for treatment.
The crash occurred just a day after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), currently at war with Sudan’s military, claimed to have shot down a fighter jet in South Darfur. The ongoing civil war, which began in April 2023, has divided the country, with the army holding the north and east while the RSF controls large parts of the west and south.
As fighting continues, this latest tragedy has deepened fears about the safety of civilians caught in the conflict.
