Folorunso Alakija, a 73-year-old Nigerian billionaire and founder of Famfa Oil, has reportedly become completely blind following a health crisis.
Medical sources indicate that her vision deteriorated after a near air mishap during a flight with her husband, Modupe Alakija, Chairman of Famfa Oil. The incident allegedly caused a significant increase in her blood pressure, adversely affecting her eyesight.
In response to the incident, Alakija reportedly acquired a new jet to avoid flying with her husband. Despite this measure, her vision continued to decline until she eventually lost her sight entirely.
Beyond her recent health challenges, Alakija is renowned for her business acumen and philanthropic endeavors. She established the Rose of Sharon Glorious Ministry International, which evolved from a small home fellowship in 2004 into a full-fledged ministry. On her 69th birthday, she was ordained as an Apostle. Famfa Oil, her flagship company, holds a significant stake in Nigeria’s lucrative OML 127 oil block.
Alakija’s career began in the 1970s after studying secretarial skills in London and working as an executive secretary in Lagos. Her achievements have earned her recognition as one of Africa’s wealthiest and most influential women, with a Forbes-estimated net worth of about $1 billion as of 2020.
This development underscores that even the most accomplished individuals can face unforeseen personal challenges.
