2027 Northern Power Play Faces Reality Check Against Tinubu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) held its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Wednesday in Abuja, where President Bola Ahmed Tinubu received strong backing for a second term in 2027.

Notably, several founding members and former officials, including ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and ex-Governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, were absent from the gathering.

Despite these absences, the atmosphere was charged with support for President Tinubu. Attendees chanted slogans like “no vacancy at Aso Rock” and sang the party’s anthem upon his arrival, signaling robust approval for his leadership and potential re-election bid.

APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, addressed the assembly, revealing that the party faces significant financial challenges, including nearly N9 billion in legal liabilities from various election-related litigations. He also announced plans to secure a new national secretariat to better accommodate party operations.

The meeting saw the presence of key figures such as Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and several incumbent governors. However, the absence of prominent members like Buhari, Osinbajo, El-Rufai, and Amaechi has sparked discussions about possible internal divisions within the party.

As the APC moves forward, the endorsement of President Tinubu for the 2027 election and the conspicuous absence of key members highlight the dynamic and evolving nature of the party’s internal landscape.
