A fiery exchange between Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House has sparked outrage, with SNP MP Stephen Gethins calling for Trump’s second state visit to the UK to be scrapped.
Gethins described Trump’s behavior towards Zelensky as “grotesque” and “bullying,” stating that the UK has left itself in an isolated position and needs to get closer to its European partners and allies.
He emphasized that given Trump’s treatment of Ukraine, a state visit cannot possibly go ahead.
The controversy began when Trump accused Zelensky of “gambling with World War Three” during a meeting at the Oval Office.
Zelensky had hoped for positive talks, including the signing of a minerals deal that would give the US a stake in Ukraine’s future.
Instead, he faced a dressing-down from Trump and his Vice-President JD Vance, who demanded that he show more gratitude for US support.
Zelensky pushed back, stating that Ukraine is ready to sign the minerals agreement but continues to call for US security guarantees.
The exchange prompted responses from European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who reiterated their support for Ukraine.
First Minister John Swinney posted on X, saying that Scotland stands with Ukraine and its European allies in defending the country.
Scottish Conservative MP Andrew Bowie also expressed support for Zelensky, describing the White House exchange as a “sad and depressing spectacle.”
The proposed state visit has been met with opposition, with the Scottish Greens stating that Trump is not welcome in Scotland.
A petition has also been launched, calling for the state visit to be canceled.
