ECOWAS at 50: Sanwo-Olu Hails Regional Body’s Progress, Calls for Renewed Commitment to Integration
Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, hailed the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for growing from a “cold idea” into a regional organisation shaping the destiny of West Africa.
“From a bold idea, ECOWAS has grown into a dynamic regional organisation that has shaped the destiny of West Africa,” Sanwo-Olu said while delivering a keynote address at the opening ceremony of the parliamentary seminar of the ECOWAS Parliament.
He expressed his honour at being part of the historic gathering, acknowledging the distinguished audience of leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders dedicated to regional integration, peace, and prosperity in West Africa.
Sanwo-Olu praised the ECOWAS Parliament for its pivotal role in shaping the regional agenda, championing integration, advocating for citizens’ rights, and addressing regional challenges.
“The ECOWAS Parliament has been instrumental in promoting free movement and trade, supporting peacekeeping missions, and electoral processes,” Sanwo-Olu noted.
He emphasised Lagos State’s commitment to supporting ECOWAS, recognising the state’s role as a gateway for trade, investment, and cultural exchange in West Africa.
The Governor of Nigeria’s “Centre of Excellence,” acknowledged the challenges facing the region, including security, economic development, and climate change, and stressed the need for collective action and shared solutions.
