Wildfires have swept across North and South Carolina, forcing residents to evacuate and prompting emergency declarations in both states.
More than 175 fires broke out in South Carolina, with the largest—near Myrtle Beach—burning 1,600 acres before firefighters managed to contain 30% of it. Evacuated residents were later allowed to return home.
In North Carolina, flames threatened communities near Asheville, leading to evacuations in the town of Tryon. Dry conditions and strong winds helped the fires spread quickly, making containment efforts more difficult.
State officials have imposed a burn ban across South Carolina to prevent further outbreaks, while emergency crews continue battling the blazes. Firefighters are working around the clock to contain the fires and protect homes, but the situation remains dangerous as weather conditions could still fuel new flare-ups.
