As tensions rise between the U.S. and Ukraine, speculation grows over who could lead the country if President Volodymyr Zelensky is forced out.
The Trump administration has been vocal about its dissatisfaction with Zelensky, while behind the scenes, efforts to push for a change in leadership are underway.
Lobbyists and officials close to Trump have been discussing the possibility of a shift in power, meeting with diplomats and journalists across Europe. Their actions mirror tactics used by the Kremlin to weaken Ukraine’s leadership. The situation could escalate if Zelensky travels to Washington in an attempt to mend relations after recent diplomatic breakdowns.
The fallout between the two nations has already had serious consequences. The U.S. has suspended military aid and paused intelligence sharing, moves that have played into Russia’s hands at a crucial moment in the war. Some diplomats believe that for Trump to resume support for Ukraine, he may demand Zelensky’s resignation in exchange for a resource deal and renewed military assistance.
Trump has openly criticized Zelensky, calling him a “dictator” and questioning his legitimacy since his official term ended. While Ukraine remains under martial law, elections are currently not possible, leaving Zelensky in power as the country battles ongoing Russian attacks. Despite this, Trump’s influence could shape discussions about Ukraine’s future leadership.
If Zelensky steps down, the Ukrainian constitution states that parliamentary speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk would take over as acting president. However, Trump’s circle appears to be considering other options. One name emerging is Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the former commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, who has strong backing within the military.
Ukraine’s parliament remains firmly behind Zelensky, unanimously voting on February 25 to support him. Oleksandr Merezhko, a member of Zelensky’s party, has warned that Russia is trying to weaken Ukraine from within. He believes Putin, possibly with Trump’s help, wants Zelensky gone because he symbolizes Ukraine’s resistance on the world stage.
With war raging and no clear path to elections, Ukraine faces an uncertain political future. Whether Trump’s pressure will lead to a leadership change remains to be seen, but any shift could have major consequences for the country and its fight against Russian aggression.
